Setúbal is a city and region on the Western Coast of Portugal, under an hour’s drive south from Lisbon airport to which direct flights from the UK take under three hours. In the early 20thcentury Setubal was Portugal’s most important fishing area and though that industry has since been replaced with tourism, links toits past can still be seen on its coastline and marinas. Backed by the Arrabida Hills natural park, there’s lovely green countryside to explore nearby as well as a large selection of golden sandy beaches perfect for sunbathing or a spot of water sports. Bursting with history, Setubal’s streets are narrow and colourful and dotted with churches and there’s a 16thCentury fortress. With all this plus peak summer temperatures of 30 degrees, it’s easy to see to see the appeal of the place.
