Where to find a property for sale in Midi-Pyrenees

The Midi-Pyrenees is a fantastic tranche of south-west France that offers everything from skiing and historic towns to wonderfully preserved traditional villages. It includes the many of the aspects of French life that buyers seek to acquire, yet is not one of the most expensive regions either.

So where to look? The Tarn, Lot and Garonne areas are all easily accessed by Toulouse, a very popular hub for British buyers, of which a good number commute weekly back to the UK to gain the best of both worlds.

The Tarn, a region often referred to as the ‘French Tuscany’ for its endless valleys of beautiful rolling countryside punctuated by cypress trees and medieval hill-top towns is a popular spot for one. It offers the episcopal city of Albi (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and is not so Anglicised as the Dordogne and an exceptional gastronomic heritage.

Your money also goes much further when buying property there. You can get a traditional village home for €150,000 and small farms or maison de maîtres in need of TLC for €200,000.  Next door in the Aveyron your money also goes far: you can get a two-bedroom village house there for under €90,000. Cordes sur Ciel, a hillside village with beautiful views and international flavour, is popular, plus also Gaillac, famed for its wine and jazz festivals.  Bear in mind that this area’s Rodez airport is much less well served than Toulouse.

For those that want to be within easy reach of the mountains then the Hautes-Pyrenees and Haute-Garonne departments are popular. Bear in mind that prices can be higher in locations closer to Toulouse, a charming city that is more popular as a place from which to explore (especially the famous Canal du Midi) rather than buy a home in, for the British.

Heading for the hills? With a dash of Basque flair (this area does border Spain) the French Pyrenees is more affordable and less developed than the Alps, with a real year-round appeal. The resort of Bagneres-de-Luchon is a popular hub that offers good opportunities for holiday rental income.

With an average property price of €159,600, this region is mid-range for buyers but rich in choice and hard to beat for lifestyle. It’s perfect if you are seeking the southern climate and authentic village life without the tourist hordes.
