Overseas travel to buy property now deemed a 'reasonable excuse'

Two pieces of welcome news for British people looking to buy an overseas property or prepare a home for rental.

From March 29th the ‘reasonable excuses to travel’ abroad allows journeys from the UK ‘in connection with the purchase, sale, letting or rental of a residential property’. This means travel to visit estate agent offices, view properties and make preparations to move in, will now be permissible.

Anyone looking to travel for this reason will need to check restrictions for the country they plan to visit, but there was further good news this week for buyers interested in Spain.

From March 30th when the current travel ban expires, the Spanish government is permitting arrivals from the UK to enter the country with the only new requirement a negative PCR test result taken no more than 72 hours before arrival.

Meanwhile fines of up to £5,000 remain in place for anyone attempting to go on holiday, meaning these concessions for prospective and current overseas home owners are both generous and significant.
