INFORMATION: GULF OF POETS
GULF OF POETS: Portovenere, San Terenzo, Lerici, Tellaro. This is the name given to the gulf of La Spezia, which stretches from Portovenere, with the islands of Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto, to the beautiful village of Tellaro. Lerici, the largest municipality in the Gulf, is part of the Montemarcello Natural Park and lies along with San Terenzo within a small natural inlet called the "Gulf of Lerici," which includes some of the most beautiful beaches of the Ligurian Levante with crystal-clear waters and fine sand. Also, splendid are the coves, accessible on foot with steep stairs or by sea, found as you continue towards Tellaro, a village perched on the cliffs of the sea, an ancient pirate hideout. At the opposite end of the Gulf lies the enchanting village of Portovenere, whose beauty fueled the legend that a temple dedicated to Venus Ericina was erected here, where today stands the romantic church of San Pietro. The Palmaria Island closes the horizon, separated from the medieval village of Portovenere by a narrow stretch of sea called "Le Bocche," where visitors can refresh themselves with splendid walks and swims in the cool waters. Portovenere, Palmaria Island, and Tino have been part of UNESCO's World Heritage since 1997.
IT CAN BE REACHED by train with a stop in La Spezia, from where bus and ferry services are available; by car via the A15 PR-SP motorway, exiting at La Spezia and then following the signs for Lerici (before entering the city) or for Portovenere.
