The ancient and suggestive village of Castanea delle Furie rises to an altitude of about 400m on the green hills that surround the city of Messina. This enviable position, its healthy air, the tranquility and hospitality of its inhabitants have made it a holiday destination and preferred stay by the illustrious families of the Messina aristocracy, whose stay in the village is testified by numerous stately villas.

The city of Messina revolved around this village which was one of the most important hamlets of Messina, so much so as to arouse the interest of the military order of the Knights of Malta (and subsequently of the Knights of Jerusalem) of which it was a possession for centuries. The complex urban structure was enriched by remarkable buildings and works of art dating from the early Middle Ages to the eclecticism of the early twentieth century with twenty-four churches and three monasteries, most of which were destroyed by the earthquake of 1908. Among the churches that can be visited today we have those of San Giovanni, Santa Caterina, Il Tonnaro, Santa Rosalia and SS. Rosary.

During the Christmas period, the atmosphere of a Bethlehem village can be found in the alleys of the ancient farmhouse with the setting up of the famous Living Nativity Scene, one of the most evocative in Sicily. Finally, the Ethno-Anthropological Museum of rural, peasant and seafaring art in the Peloritani area is particularly interesting.
