Its municipal district is divided into three councils: El Esparragal, Cabezo de la Jara and Puerto Adentro. It has a total population of 14,339, of which 11,120 live in the town centre. The rest are distributed among the Diputaciones, with El Esparragal being the most populated of the three (INE 2011). It is located 87 kilometres from the capital of Murcia.~~The municipality is traversed by the A-7 Mediterranean Motorway between km 646 and 662, as well as by the old N-340 road, by the A-91 motorway, which connects with the A-92N when entering Andalusia and which heads towards Guadix and Granada and whose conventional alternative is the N-342 road, by the RM-D19 regional road which heads towards Águilas, and by other secondary roads which allow communication between the districts.
